Nephrology is the study of the function and diseases of the kidneys. Our nephrologists are specially trained to take care of transplant patients.

Dr. Suverta Bhayana is the medical director of the Pancreas and Live Donor Transplant Program. She earned her medical degree from Rohtak Medical College, India in 2001. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Nephrology at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She completed Transplant Nephrology Fellowship at University of Washington, Seattle. Her clinical and research interests include management of urinary tract infection and immunosuppression in renal transplant patients. Dr. Bhayana specializes in medical management of kidney and pancreas transplant patients.

Dr. Patel received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at UT Health in San Antonio. He completed his fellowship training in Nephrology also at UT Health in San Antonio. He specializes in adult kidney transplant and has a special interest in living kidney donation and donor outcomes.

Dr. Toth maintains board certification of Internal Medicine as well as Nephrology. Her medical studies were completed at Hahnemann University School of Medicine. She performed her Nephrology Fellowship at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and Transplantation Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to serving patients in the San Antonio area, Dr. Toth has served the USA via the United States Air Force. She has been with Renal Associates since 2001. While she loves all of her patients, there is a special place in Dr. Toth’s heart for transplantation.

Dr. Pierce received her medical degree and doctorate of philosophy from UT Health San Antonio. She completed both an Internal Medicine residency and a Nephrology fellowship at University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Shirin R. Sharma, M.D. has more than six years of combined experience in general practice and nephrology. Dr. Sharma practiced as an MD, Nephrology Fellow at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, diagnosing and treating a variety of kidney conditions in critical and acute settings. Her extensive experience in both primary care and nephrology makes her a unique asset to our team and her patients.
