Ok Cha Martin, Liver Transplant Recipient, 1995 & 2007
When she was first diagnosed with chronic Hepatitis B in 1992, Ok Cha was told transplantation was not an option. But by 1995, medicine had come a long way. She received her first transplant at Wilford Hall at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. She was given an experimental drug called FK 506, which we now know as Prograf. By 2005, the Hepatitis had caused tumors to grow in her new liver. She was retransplanted in 2007 at University Transplant Center. In 2008, after 18 years, she was able to return to her home town in South Korea and see her family. But she didn’t stop there: Ok Cha and her husband, Bob, have traveled to over seven different countries and seen such sights as the Sistine Chapel, the Coliseum, the Eiffel Tower, and the crown jewels in the Tower of London. She tries to return to South Korea every year, and has her next trip planned for the summer of 2012.
