About Lung Transplant
Lung Disease Diagnosis
- A lung transplant may be needed for the following diseases:
- Interstitial Lung Diseases
- Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)
- Sarcoidosis
- Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
- Pulmonary Manifestations of Collagen Vascular Disease
- Eosinophilic Granuloma
- Lymphangiomyomatosis (LAM)
- Pulmonary Vascular Disorders
- Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH)
- Obstructive Lung Diseases
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)/ Emphysema
- Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
- Bronchiectasis
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Other rare conditions may be considered for lung transplantation.
Transplant Candidate Selection
Generally, in order to be considered for lung transplantation, you must experience advanced lung disease, you have failed all available medical therapies and face a high risk of death within one to two years or sustained poor quality of life secondary to lung disease. You should be under the age of 65 to be considered for both single and double lung transplant.
Reasons not to transplant include active cancer, hepatitis B or hepatitis C with proven cirrhosis, current substance abuse (including tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs), obesity and other factors. See the patient guide for more detailed criteria.
