The Liver Transplant Program at University Hospital was started in 1992 by Glenn A. Halff, M.D., who is now the Director of the University Transplant Center and Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Since then, we have performed over 1,200 liver transplants with excellent results. In 1997, we performed the first split-liver transplant in South Texas. This occurred when a liver from an adult donor was shared between a child and an adult. We also performed the first adult to adult living donor liver transplant in South Texas.
Our program has grown to be one of the largest transplant programs in volume in Texas, and we remain dedicated to excellence in the care of transplant patients.
You probably have many questions about liver transplantation and the process necessary to receive a new liver. This online guide presents an overview. A more comprehensive patient handbook is also available.
