Referral Criteria

  • Patient must be on dialysis for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or carry the diagnosis of Chronic Renal Failure with estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) of less than 20 ml/min.
    • Patients considered for living donor transplant do not need to be on dialysis but must meet the above criteria.
  • Patient must be medically compliant and capable of following a complex post-operative regimen.
  • Patient must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 40.
  • Patient must have Medicare, Medicaid, and/or private insurance coverage.

Other costs to be considered include travel expenses for patients who live outside San Antonio (including the patient and support system) and the possibility of time away from work.

Some conditions proscribing kidney transplant can be corrected. University Transplant Center physicians and coordinators are available to answer questions for referring physicians at anytime. Call 210-567-5777
